T@}hese may be created in graphics 9 or 15. -Displays in "APAC Interlace mode", which suppresses tA}he annoying black lines that appeared in previous APAC displays. Some shimmering of the image may be visB}ible. -Detects when too little memory is available when program loads, prompts you to try againC}. -Tells you when it can't find RGBTABL8.OBJ, allows you to swap in D} APACVIEW V2.4 Docs page 6 the right disk and try again. -No handling oE}f left or top offsets. -No allowing for multiple images in one file (does stop at end of first F}image). -The program occupies RAM from $2600 to $BFFF. This implies you must have a 48K Atari,G} with no cartridges installed, and a DOS that does not expect to use addresses above $2600. -APH}ACVIEW displays GIF interlace mode pictures by averaging the luminance between lines already drawn on the screen wiI}th new ones. The fourth pass over a screen with height divide = 4 does nothing (press SELECT to skip). J} ABOUT GIF GIF, or Graphics Interchange Format, is a hardware-independent graphics fK}ile format developed by CompuServe. It is an adaptation of the Lempel-Ziv Welch compression algorithm, which is also usL}ed by the ARC/UNARC and AlfCrunch programs. This version does not handle any updates to the GIF specificationM} not coincident with the 'GIF87a' format. There is now a new release (GIF89a) of this specification. Any users ouN}t there who desperately need compatibility with the new format, please send a lot of cash, and I'll eventually get O}to it :-). Note that this version only checks for the word 'GIF' in the header, and will thus accept GIF89a pictures. P} No support of the new features or extension blocks is implied. COLOR TUNING Included in thisQ} ARChive is the file COLORS.GIF (a new test pattern I created, which saves a lot of disk space). Load this file and refR}er to the following table: APACVIEW V2.4 S}Docs page 7 ----------------------------------- : : DARK : LIGHT : T} : : BLACK : GRAY : GRAY : WHITE : : : : : :U} ----------------------------------- : : : : YELLOW : V} : RED : ORANGE : YELLOW : GREEN : : : : : : W} ----------------------------------- : : GREEN : : CYAN : : X}GREEN : CYAN : CYAN : BLUE : : : : : : --------Y}--------------------------- : : BLUE : :MAGENTA : : BLUE :MAGENTAZ} :MAGENTA : RED : : : : : : -----------------------[}------------ Adjust your monitor until these colors look as close as possible. On my monitor, the only\} color that's a little off is BLUE MAGENTA, which looks a little too magenta to me. And maybe the red tends a little ]} toward "rust"... CREATING .PZM OR .ILC FILES Note that the file format for either of these is ^}identical: 7680 bytes of graphics 9 information, followed by 7680 bytes of graphics 11 information. So the creatio_}n process is quite simple: use [M] to select "Gr.9" and load a GIF file. After it has loaded, use [S] to save it.`} Use a filename with a .ILC or .PZM extender. Press [M] again to select "Gr.11" mode, and reload the same GIF file. Aa}fter it has loaded, use [S] to save it to the same filename. You will notice that "SAVE" now asks if you wish to "b}Overwrite" or "Append". Type "A" to append the graphics 11 screen. After it has been saved in this manner, you cac}n reload it with [I] or [P] (whichever you prefer, both can load the same files). I'll admit I haven't tuned the colorsd} for the best response with Pryzm; I look to the users for creative criticism :-). Note that .PZM/.ILC fe}ormat appears to be compatible with K.O. Distributors' Escalpaint program. COLRVIEW COMPATIBILITY f} COLRVIEW, if you haven't heard of it, loads three color separation files, and displays, in graphics 9 resolution, g}an image that provides up to 4096 colors (!). Alternately it can display in graphics 15 resolution with up to 64 cq} B%DOS SYSB*)DUP SYSBUSAPACVIEWCOMB!RGBTABL8OBJB COLORS GIFBAPACVW24DOColors. These files can be created in the following manner: r} APACVIEW V2.4 Docs page 8 After possibly viewing the .GIF file in APAC mode, use the M command to select res}d mode (red9 or red15, depending on what resolution you wish to create). Load the file, then save it to some filename wt}ith the extension ".R". Use the M command to select green mode, reload the file and save it with a ".G" extension.u} Use the M command again to select blue mode, reload the file and save it with a ".B" extension. To savv}e a section of the image which you have "zoomed in on", do your zooming on the red screen. Save the file as you did abow}ve, and change to green mode. Use V to view the image. Press OPTION to put up the cursors. Don't move them, and x}press the joystick button to reload the same area of the image in green mode. After it has loaded, save it. Changy}e to blue mode, and use V to view the image. Press OPTION again, and press the joystick button to reload the same area z}of the image in blue mode. After the blue image loads, save it. Experiment a little if these instructions seem co{}nfusing. Sorry, but there is not enough room (RAM in a 48K 8-bit Atari) to decode and display a GIF picture i|}n COLRVIEW mode. You must exit APACVIEW and load COLRVIEW in order to see your pictures in this new mode. Please }}upload your favorite pictures to the pay services and BBSes (preferably ARC'ed to save disk space), and drop me a line a~}bout them. WHERE TO FIND GIF FILES Being the inventor of the GIF standard, CompuServe has the larg}est selection of online art. A recent issue of CompuServe Magazine (April 1992) lists the following forums where o}nline art can be located: ART GALLERY FORUM (GO ARTGALLERY) COMPUTER ART FORUM (GO COMART) } QUICK PICTURES FORUM (GO QPICS) PHOTOGRAPHY FORUM (GO PHOTOFORUM) ...and of course you can just type G}O GRAPHICS to enter the main graphics forum. Also be sure to check the individual computer sections, which may hav}e an art section (GO ATARIARTS, GO AMIGAARTS, etc.). The Graphics File Finder (GO GRAPHFF) can also be used to sea}rch for GIF files by subject matter. CompuServe has also started releasing a quarterly hardcopy directory called "Best} of 'Go Graphics'", which can be ordered online (GO GRAPHICS). GEnie also has a large amount of online art in} GIF format. Check into the Photobase Library (PHOTO), the individual computer libraries (Atari 8-bit, IBMPC, Amig}a, Macintosh, Apple II, Atari ST, etc.). Also check out the Japan RoundTable if you are a fan of Anime (art from J}apanese animated shows). Also check out your local bulletin board systems. Even BBSes that aren't Atari will} most likely have a collection of GIF files online. APACVIEW} V2.4 Docs page 9 FINAL NOTES This program has mostly been the result of my research and toiling. I} am depending on YOU, the Atari users, to give me feedback on what's missing, what I've done wrong, and (hopefully)} what you like about the program. My thanks to Don Davis, R. Woodruff, Bob Puff, David Beifeld, Charles Blaquiere,} Ken Wickert, and Wendell Hong for their useful suggestions. I have tested this program with MyDOS 4.5. It s}hould work properly with Atari DOS 2.0 and 2.5 and SpartaDOS 3.2. If you have trouble with SpartaDOS, try disablin}g the TD line, KEY, and Verify. Sparta DOS X apparently does not leave RAMTOP low enough for this program. With a}ny DOS, be sure to disable BASIC, whether it is built-in, or a separate cartridge. Be sure to check out my ot}her programs: APACSHOW This is a slideshow program that loads APAC mode files from disk for displ}ay one after another. A random-pixel dissolve from one image to another occurs every several seconds, } which can be interrupted and restarted. COLRVIEW This program is the viewer for ColorView files} created with APACVIEW, or downloaded from Bulletin Boards. The latest version (2.6) lets you }view all the ColorView files on a disk in "slideshow" mode. DEGASRD This program lets y}ou view Atari ST Degas format (standard or compressed, any resolution) in Graphics 9 or 15 mono}chrome, or in ColorView's 64 or 4096 color modes. Version 1.1 provides the same "slideshow" feature mentioned} above. GIFNCODE This program allows you to load four popular Atari picture } formats (MicroPainter, Micro Illustrator/Koala, Graphics 8 and 9) and convert them to GIF files. This can }be done interactively, letting you convert an entire disk of pictures one after another without} memorizing the filenames. This is useful for Atarians who want to exchange their pictures with} other computer users via bulletin boards. ILBMREAD This program lets you load and view Amiga IFF pictu}res in APAC mode. The flexible joystick interface allows you to select rectangular sections of} the image for further inspection. ILBMREAD also saves the output in APAC mode. If you c}annot find these programs on your local bulletin board or pay service, they can be ordered directly from me for the foll}owing rates: APACVIEW V2.4 Docs page 10 } PROGRAM VERSION PRICE -------- ------- ----- AP}ACSHOW 2.3 6.50 COLRVIEW 2.6 8.50 DEGASRD 1.1 } 8.50 GIFNCODE 1.0 6.50 ILBMREAD 2.1 6.50 } Prices include postage and handling, in U.S. dollars. Printed docs will be provided. Disks will be SSSD unles}s specified otherwise (I can provide up to DSDD). APACVIEW is a shareware product. If you use and enjoy this} program, please express your satisfaction with a letter and the $10.00 registration fee. In return you will recei}ve an autographed, registered copy (without the shareware notice) of the most recent version, with printed document}ation. I can also arrange to notify you (electronic mail or otherwise) when a new version of this program is avail}able. Registered owners can receive the next version for a nominal fee to cover materials and postage. Registering als}o encourages me to create enhancements to this program, and to create other Atari 8-bit software. It would also he}lp pay some of my bills on the pay services, providing support and seeking feedback. If you haven't noticed, the m}arket for Atari 8-bit software has diminished such that large commercial software houses cannot justify producing n}ew releases. So I encourage all 8-bit users of shareware to register and support the remaining small software developer}s. Please use the easy-response letter on the next page.
